While notable for launching the career of Emily Blunt (a scene-stealing standout in an astonishing cast) and boosting that of Anne Hathaway, who had until then primarily performed in films for younger audiences, it is the instantly-iconic, Oscar-nominated performance of a white-haired, deliciously-dressed Meryl Streep as Priestly that, with her ice-cold one-liners and cool demeanor, once again demonstrated the power and prowess of this acting legend and proved that she could be a major summer box office draw. Further elevated by David Frankel's strong direction and a razor-sharp, perfectly-structured screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA still stands head-and-shoulders over most other studio comedies for its marriage of intelligence and pure entertainment value.
