When David Lynch's TV pilot failed to be picked up as a series, he expanded it into the surreal puzzle box that is MULHOLLAND DR. Describing this weird, wild, wonderful film is an exercise in futility - as is trying to fully make sense of it. And that's much of the reason why this film has endured and sparked much debate. MULHOLLAND DR. is a brain-teaser of a film that finds both Lynch and longtime producer/editor Mary Sweeney working at their respective peaks, crafting a dazzling dream of a film that is both endlessly enjoyable and haunting.
Mary Sweeney is a film editor, screenwriter, director, and producer best known for her collaborations with David Lynch on such works as INLAND EMPIRE (producer), MULHOLLAND DRIVE (BAFTA win for editing, also producer), THE STRAIGHT STORY (writer, editor, producer), LOST HIGHWAY (producer, editor), TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (editor), and TWIN PEAKS (editor). Mary also directed the feature film, BARABOO, along with some short films and hosted the podcast, FLOAT. She is the Dino and Martha De Laurentiis Endowed Professor in the Writing Division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
